ABOUT US
Our Story
When I first decided to adopt a dog, I did what many first time adopters-to-be do. I imagined all the wonderful ways my life would change for the better. I thought about how wonderful it would be to go on long hikes with my new companion, snuggling on the sofa together and playing fetch in the park. She'd be overjoyed by her fancy new bed and toys and would make herself right at home! The reality of welcoming a dog into my family was very different.
I picked up Rosa from a dog shelter in the south of Spain. She had been found a few weeks before, wondering around in an abandoned field with her four puppies, scared and starving. When we first arrived home, she refused to go into the building. She just stood outside the entrance, frozen. After spending an hour trying to convince her to come upstairs to no avail, I had to carry her up. Even then, she just stood at the apartment doorway and cried. It was the most heart wrenching sound I’d ever heard. The realisation suddenly dawned, that this poor soul had been taken away from everything and everywhere she was familiar with and sent home with me, a complete stranger in a strange place. I felt so silly for not having considered this scenario. She didn't want to be here. She didn't trust me. And she certainly didn't care about the bed or toys. Not yet anyway. That evening I felt the weight of the responsibility I had taken on without realising it. It was up to me to make sure this beautiful dog had all her needs cared for. I hadn’t actively thought beyond providing her with a comfortable home, food, vet care, exercise and enrichment. Like many first time dog guardians, I never stopped to really consider a dog’s emotional experience and needs. It was only at that moment, listening to Rosa cry with fear, that I realised I was also responsible for her emotional wellbeing. This was the first of many challenging situations I faced over the next 18 months. Rosa struggled with separation anxiety, reactivity towards other dogs, and she was scared of cars and children. This was the very beginning of a long and necessary journey: to learn how to do everything and anything I could to support my new companion in the best way possible. In the early days of my time with Rosa, I did what anyone would do today: I searched online for solutions to my – I mean Rosa’s – I mean our problem. However, for a long time I only found videos and articles by trainers for approaches and tools I didn’t feel comfortable with, or that clearly weren't suitable for a highly anxious rescue dog.I’ve been a marketer for nearly two decades. As a result, I know that just because an article or video appears on the first page of your search results, just because a post goes viral on social media, that doesn’t mean it offers good advice. All it means is that the people behind the content did a good job at marketing, and enough people believed them.My years of marketing experience have helped businesses grow their revenue into the six figures – and I want that for the world of science-led dog training!
